A catalogue of 60 high quality cattle of all ages encouraged a good crowd to attend the Bristol Sales Centre on Thursday this week. 33 buyers from far and wide were recorded including 12 from across the border in Wales. An average of over £2,200 and 7 individuals making 3,000 guineas or more illustrated a very good trade.
The joint top price of the day was 5,500 guineas paid twice. Firstly, Richard Thomas of Churchvale Holsteins in Carmarthen showed the lovely Shottle daughter of Hefin Wilson’s great show cow Ridgefield Goldwyn Cinderella ET EX-90, that won both the South-West and Welsh Dairy Shows this autumn. This fine upstanding heifer has won 8 1st prizes already and sold 4 weeks calved giving 37kg. She joins the BB herd of Messrs B.E Baker & Sons near Usk.
Randolf & Brian Miller consigned 2 heifers to the sale including a much admired Ross daughter from their noted Amanda family. Moorshard Durham Ross Amanda is bred from 11 generations of EX/VG cows and has been successfully shown this autumn. Peter Prior of Designer Holsteins made the successful bid at 5,500 guineas, having secured Excellence Shottle G Lisbeth, a very smart 7 month old calf, earlier in the sale for 3,000guineas.
Terry Cox, always at the top of the market at these events, showed (or rather daughter Beccy did!) a superb Shottle daughter, just 8 days calved, looking a picture and making 4,200 guineas. She is out of an EX-91 show cow bred in the Littlebredy herd and caught the late ferry for the Isle of Wight to join Paul Bradley’s Crockers herd, who purchased 3 very good animals including another Shottle heifer for 2,700gns in-calf to Sanchez from the Mikali Dee Dee family.
Mr T.R Quick of the Mendip herd, near Highbridge, was in fine form, securing Cramar Goldwyn Belle ET, that won Champion Calf at the East of England show this year. She was one of the best of Roger & Diane Steeples’s team, fetching 3,000 guineas. The 12 Cramar youngsters averaged over £1,500.
Messrs D.A & C.L Owens from Carmarthen purchased 3 high class cattle, featuring a very stylish heifer Yardhayes Talent Carol consigned by Chris Reed and bred from the Llydan Carol family. Due in a month to Samuelo, she made 3,100 guineas.
Most vendors went home happy, with young stock selling particularly well. Embryo bidders were selective with 25 cashed to average £302 a piece.

Champion Leads Moira Holstein Entry at 3,000gns
There was a buoyant trade for quality heifers and young cows with prices reaching a ceiling of 3,000gns at this week’s Holstein NI show and sale, held at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira.
Hitting the headlines in both the show and sale rings was the supreme champion, Clandeboye Design Sinead 2, bred and exhibited by Mark Logan of Clandeboye Estates, Bangor. Born in May 2008, she is by Regancrest Design, and is bred from an EX92 classified dam.
Just over three weeks calved this much-admired heifer is giving 36 kilos daily, and was snapped up by Cyril and Martin Millar for their Glenleary herd at Coleraine.
Judge, Timothy Haffey from the Kilvergan Herd in Lurgan, described the champion as outstanding. “She is very correct, and has good legs and feet and a sound udder.”
Messrs Millar also paid out 2,900gns to secure the reserve champion, Killane Rosso Pretty Pat, consigned by brothers David and Austin Perry, Ahoghill. This April 2008 born entry is by Ards Rosso, and bred from a VG83 heifer.
Next best at 2,520gns was Ards Kaiser Ruth, a July 2008 born heifer brought out by Harry Patton and Sons, Wilson and Wallace, from Newtownards. She was sired by the home-bred Ards Kaiser, and is bred from a Braedale Freelance daughter. This one also joins the Millar’s Glenleary herd.
An entry of heifers from the McLean family’s Relough herd based at Donaghmore, Dungannon, sold to a top of 2,500gns for the September 2008 born Relough Boliver Jessica.
Next best for the McLean team at 2,400gns was the October 2008 born Relough Buckeye Danna 2.
Clandeboye Estates also realised 2,400gns for the January 2008 born Clandeboye Forbidden Ruth.
Jim Morrison, Downpatrick, sold the June 2008 born Inch Lee Daphne 2 for 2,220gns. This fresh calved heifer was sired by Comestar Lee, and is backed by six generations of VG and EX dams.
Mr Morrison also secured a bid of 2,080gns for the Jenny Lou Mrshal Toystory daughter, Inch Toystory Camelia.
Auctioneer Michael Taaffe said: ”Overall trade was strong for top quality heifers, but second quality lots were somewhat back in price on previous months.”
Other leading prices include:
William Crawford, Brookeborough, Ardmore Stormatic Lheros - 2,000gns to G McKnight; and Ardmore Stormatic Jillie – 2,000gns to Stanley Porter, Drumbo.
Ronald McLean and Sons, Relough Realm Dog – 2,000gns to Wm Herron.
Clandeboye Estates, Bangor, Clandeboye CF Claire – 1,920gns to C and M Millar.
Alan Patterson, Donaghadee, Herdstown Sam Roxy – 1,920gns to C and M Millar.
Ronald McLean and Sons, Relough Ratchet Dinah – 1,920gns to C and M Millar.
Ronald McLean and Sons, Relough Realm Jessica – 1,900gns to Mr Davis.

Lisduff Sale Report
A strong demand for dairy breeding stock was evident last Saturday at the annual sale from the Lisduff herd of pedigree Holstein-friesians owned by John O’Sullivan & Sons at Whitechurch, Co. Cork.
A very large crowd saw the two top prices of the day paid for two of the four bulls sold. The 13-month old Lisduff Levity an Oman son with an EBI of 170 and out of the Mascol sired Lisduff Lenora 11 that gave 9652 kgs @ 3.46% protein in her first lactation topped the sale at 4,500. He was immediately followed for 4,400 by a second Oman son Lisduff Omentum EBI 143 this time from one of the herds top cows Lisduff Ellen 36 by Lord Lily, classified EX92 and with yields up to 12305 kgs @ 3.24% protein .
A very consistent trade for heifers saw the top price of 3,000 being paid for the Oman daughter Lisduff Mary 43 from the Duplex sired dam Mary 33 VG that had yields to 9435 kgs @3.7% protein. She was closely followed at 2,900 by the Ramos sired Dairybreiz 65 bred from the French-American cow family that produced the renowned AI Sire Hairybreiz. An Oman from the Leslie Family and a Ramos from the French originating Neottie family both sold for 2,750. The entire group of heifers averaged 2,250.
Heifer calves from the sale heifers sold to 1, 150 and averaged 920.
The animals were sold to buyers in Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Clare, Galway, Monaghan, Meath, Westmeath, Wexford and Waterford.
The sale was conducted by C. Johnson & Co.

Huge Crowd at Bollthwaite Dispersal
Some 300 people packed into the small hill farm buildings at Craven Laithe on Tuesday this week for the dispersal, after 35 years in the dairy industry, of the Bolland Brothers’ first class Bollthwaite herd of pedigree Holsteins. A steady stream of vehicles, many towing stock trailers, filled the long track up to the farm from 10.30am onwards, providing one of the biggest crowds seen at a sale for a while. 51 buyers were recorded for just 111 cattle, with many local farmers keen to support the well regarded Bolland family. The decision to quit milk production was brought upon the family by NVZ regulations forcing the instalment of an expensive slurry storage system, which would be utterly unviable with a milk price of around 20ppl and a small herd of 50 cows.
Over the years of developing the Bollthwaite herd, Robert and Felix acquired many top ranked cow families from the UK and Canada. This provided for an interesting catalogue, which stirred the interest of many breeders from as far afield as Fife, Leicestershire and Cornwall. The top price came early in the day with Bollthwaite Cousteau Miss America ET PI EX-91, milking in her 4th lactation and due again in September. She joins Colin Middleton’s Mittonvale herd, near Blackburn at 2,600 guineas. Mr Middleton purchased 6 super breeding cows in the first 20 lots, including Bollthwaite Mtoto Louise 9 PI EX-92, giving 35kg in her 6th lactation and due in September to Shottle, for 2,200 guineas. Louise is one of two Excellent sisters out of the Canadian import Jolene Raider Louise EX-91.
Another member of the Louise family made second top price of 2,400gns. Messrs I.R & D.E Wellock from Skipton were the final bidders for this smart fresh calved heifer. There were 8 sound fresh heifers at the end of the milking herd which averaged over £2,000. These included Bollthwaite Maestro Nettle GP-84 at 2,150 guineas, one of 5 milking heifers purchased by Messrs A Sowray & Son from Harrogate.
Served heifers sold well, up to 2,100 guineas for a Lindio daughter of an EX-93 Honeybee and maiden heifers peaked at 1,320 gns for a Rampage Red daughter from the Ricki family. Heifer calves at foot were a flying trade, averaging out at £766 with 2 making over 1,000 gns.

Keith Barrett Receieves Canadian Milking Shorthorn Distinguished Service Award
This year, the Canadian Milking Shorthorn Society is pleased to honour Keith Barrett with a Distinguished Service Award, which includes an honourary life membership to the Society. This award recognizes Milking Shorthorn breeders who have provided valuable contributions to the breed through leadership, breeding excellence and breed promotion.
Born and raised in Belmont, Prince Edward Island, Keith purchased his first purebred Shorthorn in 1950 at the age of twenty. Since then, Keith has been committed to the continued development, improvement and promotion of the breed. Keith served as President of the CMSS in 1980 and 1981, as well as serving on a number of CMSS committees including the sire selection committee. Keith has also had a number of judging assignments, including judging at the Royal Winter Fair and the CNE. He has also travelled to various herds in the USA, United Kingdom and Australia to see the best of the breed in those countries. Keith is also a past-president of the PEI Shorthorn Association and is a lifetime member of the Canadian Shorthorn Association. Keith was also honoured by the PEI Institute of Agrologists for his commitment to agriculture, including being a founding member of the provincial association which established and maintain community pastures in PEI. Keith has also been a long time member of the PEI Soil and Crop Improvement Association, a member of the PEI Milk Board, and was a national board member for the Farm Credit Corporation.
Keith was instrumental in helping to build the foundation of the Oceanbrae herd through the purchase of brood cows and elite bulls from breeders in Ontario, the United States, and even England. Cows and bulls with prefixes such as Cheapside, Ridgeway, Wilder Farm, Wildwood, Sandy River, and Seagrave helped establish many of the cow families that continue to excel today.
One of the highlights of Keith’s career in breeding would come in 1986 when he and Fred had the Grand Champion Female Dual Purpose Shorthorn at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto with Oceanbrae Bessie Jo 24P EX. Descendants of this cow remain in the herd today. Keith was active for many years on the Maritime show circuit, exhibiting at Charlottetown, Summerside, Egmont Bay, Moncton, Halifax and Truro, as well as many years exhibiting at the Royal Winter Fair and even once at the Calgary Stampede.
Keith’s son Fred joined him in partnership on the farm in the mid 1970s and the two farmed together as partners until just the past few years, when Fred took over the day-to-day operation of the farm. Keith is still very active at Oceanbrae in heifer management and a variety of crop production roles, as well as working with Fred to foster the future of his grandson Matt as part of the farm. Keith and his wife Sylvia continue to live on the farm and Keith continues to keep in touch with many of the fellow Shorthorn breeders who he worked with to improve and promote the breed for many years. Along with his son Fred, Keith also has sons John and Rob, daughter Alice Maund, and step-children Kelly MacLeod and Kim Myers, all residing in PEI.

Moira Holstein bulls hit 3500gns and heifers 2500gns
Bull trade at this week's sale of Holsteins at Moira was a 3500gns call for a Picston Shottle son out of a dam from the noted Danna family. This was a highly contracted Goldwyn daughter classified VG89 and chamoion at last year's Balmoral Show. He came from Malcolm McLean.
Second top was one from Robert and Stuart Smyth, Londonderry, witha smart young bull by Mascol and out of 11,000kg dam Canvas Saskia. He sold for 3300gns.
Taking a 2150gns call was the reserve overall champion, a Mascol son from Jim Morrison, Downpatrick. He was bred from eight generations of Ex or VG dams with his dam being an Ex93 Maughlin Storm daughter.
HEIFERS
In the heifers sold on the same day the top price of 2500gns was paid for a Gillette Final Cut daughter from Robbie and Stuart Smith, Londonderry.
Also at this price was a granddaughter of Goldwyn from Jim and Edward Stevenson, Kilkeel. Making 2400gns was another from the Smiths, while one from the McLean family took another bid at the same money. (R A Noble and Co, Clogher).

New DairyCo Proofs for Non-Holstein Breeds
For breeders seeking to use non-Holstein bloodlines, DairyCo publishes a range of other breed proofs, which continue to show the levels of stability that have come to be expected.
Leading British Friesians remain unchanged with Sem 7 ranked number one with a PLI of £133. Irish proven Grietman is second (PLI £113) and UK-bred Lakemead Rancher ranks third (PLI £107).
The Ayrshires also retain their front-runner with Brieryside Golden Sand (PLI £169) who is now followed closely by G Ebdo (PLI £157) ahead of Orraryd (PLI £133), ranked third.
Moving into first place on the Guernsey Merit Index (GMI) rankings is Sniders Option Aaron (GMI 359) while second position is shared between Boskenna Junes Royal Oak and Coulee Crest Luxury Spider (GMI 345). However, poor daughter Fertility Indexes for some leading Guernsey sires, (which are not yet included in GMI), will prompt some breeders to look lower in the GMI rankings for their choice of bulls.
DJ Hulk retains the number one position for the Jerseys, with a PLI of £185. Super-high daughter fertility transmitter (Fertility Index 8.6), Hollylane Lilibets Legacy moves up from fifth to second place thanks to an improvement in his Lifespan Index (now +0.3). His PLI of £171 pushes Q Impuls into third position with a PLI of £159.
“There’s considerable interest in the breeds other than Holstein which are being used in crossing programmes as well as for pure breeding, so breeders should be reminded that they cannot compare one breed’s indexes with another,” says
Marco Winters, head of genetics for DairyCo. “If they are considering a variety of breed options, they will need to apply a conversion formula to make such comparisons.
“The other trap they’ll need to be aware of is the fact that some bulls are not the breed they seem at first glance. This may not be important for many breeders, but if, for example, a breeder wanted to avoid Holstein bloodlines, they would need to check the percentage Holstein in an animal that was marketed as Ayrshire, or even Shorthorn, because they could find themselves using more Holstein than they think if they don’t make such checks.
“Any reputable AI company should provide this information, or the breed society with which the bull is registered will be able to tell you its percentage Holstein, Ayrshire or Shorthorn,” says Mr Winters.
“But whatever breed is chosen – and that now includes Shorthorn, Brown Swiss and Montbeliarde for which we publish indexes - the key principles remain the same, which is to study each bull’s proof with care and take account of its overall economic index (usually PLI) as a preliminary screening process.
“After that, each herd will have different requirements and may wish to also consider traits such as combined fat and protein or one of the fitness traits such as fertility, cell counts, lifespan or locomotion.
“And as with the Holstein, it’s important to remember to look for positive figures for all of the fitness traits with the exception of cell counts, where negative figures are desirable.”
